‘Excellent drink and miraculous abundance’: the science (and magic) of beer production
October 23, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
£10
A talk and beer tasting with Dr Dawn Maskell on the science of brewing, featuring a selection of local craft ales.
St John of Beverley is remembered for conducting many miracles, but did you know that one of them was creating an inexhaustible supply of beer for a banquet?
Beer was a staple of the medieval diet, and depictions of people drinking beer can even be found among the hundreds of roof bosses in St Mary’s Church.
Beverley is a town of historic and characterful pubs, in which is still served one of the nation’s favourite beverages – but how much do you know about the production of beer?
In this talk and tasting session, Dr Dawn Maskell (Director of the International Centre for Brewing & Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh), introduces both the science and the art of brewing. This will also include an exploration of the contributions that brewing has made to the world of science, some of which may come as a surprise.
