The scallop shell is an ancient symbol of pilgrimage. A hoard of 1300 scallop shells will be in Beverley especially for the festival – one for each year that has elapsed since St John of Beverley died in AD 721. We invite you to come and collect your free scallop shell from St Mary’s Church as a memento of this special anniversary year for the town. Keep it, decorate it if you wish, give it to someone you love, send it to a friend and tell them about our wonderful town, or place it somewhere that is special to you. The choice is yours.
